Hoy se ha celebrado en Londres el Sorteo que designa la distribución de los equipos que competirán en los distintos grupos de la Copa del Mundo 2011 en Nueva Zelanda.

El bombo ha deparado que, en caso de clasificarse, España se vería incluida en el grupo B o en el grupo C. Si España queda en segundo lugar del Campeonato de Europa, le correspondería el Grupo C, compitiendo con Australia, Irlanda, Italia y el subcampeón del
Torneo Clasificatorio de las Américas.

Otra posibilidad es que España acabe primera en el Campeonato de Europa o que gane un play-off intercontinental (al que se accede al acabar en tercer lugar del Campeonato de Europa) a celebrarse en 2010. En ambas situaciones quedaría incluida en el Grupo C, junto con Australia, Irlanda e Italia.

En el Grupo A, Nueva Zelanda y Francia han quedado emparejadas junto con Tonga y el ganador de los torneos clasificatorios de América y Asia. Dos de las selecciones más potentes del mundo evitan un posterior cruce en los cuartos de Final y en Semifinales.

En el Grupo B competirán las selecciones de Argentina, Escocia e Inglaterra, junto con el primer clasificado del Campeonato de Europa y el ganador de un play off en el que participará el tercer clasificado del Campeonato de Europa y otros 3 representantes de África, Asia y América. Argentina, que se había visto desfavorecida con el sistema de clasificación utilizado en anteriores Copas del Mundo, le ha vuelto a tocar un grupo muy complicado donde el segundo puesto se venderá muy caro.

En el Grupo C, Australia se enfrentará a Irlanda, a Italia, al Subcampeón del Campeonato de Europa y al segundo clasificado del Torneo clasificatorio de América.

En el Grupo D, Sudáfrica, actual Campeona del Mundo, se mediará a Gales, Fiji, y al primer clasificado de las eliminatorias continentales de Oceanía y África.

Los 'All Blacks' abrirán su Mundial frente a Tonga

Ya se conoce el partido inaugural del próximo Mundial de Rugby que se disputará dentro de dos años en Nueva Zelanda. Realizado el sorteo de grupos y fechas, el calendario ha deparado que los 'All Blacks', los anfitriones, y Tonga abrirán la competición el viernes 9 de septiembre de 2011 en el Eden Park de Auckland.

Inglaterra debutará frente a Argentina, mientras que Australia lo hará con Italia

Este encuentro marcará el inicio de una comeptición que durará seis semanas, que acabará el 23 de octubre con la final en Auckland y que por primera vez organiza Nueva Zelanda en solitario, ya que también participó en la organización del primer Mundial, el de 1987, pero fue junto a Australia. Precisamente aquél fue el único cetro mundial conquistado por los 'All Blacks', que desde entonces han encarado cada cita como grandes favoritos, pero en todas se quedaron con la miel en los labios.

Por su parte, Suráfrica comenzará la defensa del título mundial conquistado en Francia'2007, el segundo tras el logrado en 1995 en su propio parís, ante País de Gales, mientras que Inglaterra, actual subcampeón y único equipo del Hemisferio Norte que fue campeón, en Australia'2003, debutará frente a Argentina, brillantemente clasificada como tercero en el último Mundial.

Australia, la otra campeona mundialista, tras sus títulos de 1991 y 1999, se estrenará contra Italia, mientras que Francia lo hará con el mejor clasificado de la zona de Asia, probablemente Japón.

Los organizadores también anunciaron que el Eden Park de Auckland acogerá las dos emifinales de la competición, mientras que los cuartos de final se disputarán en Christchurch para los cruces de los grupos A (el de Nueva Zelanda, Francia y Tonga) con el B (el de Inglaterra, Argentina y Escocia), mientras que Wellington será la sede de los cruces entre el grupo C (el de Australia, Irlanda e Italia) y el D (el de Suráfrica, País de Gales y Fidji).

La selección española mantiene la vigésimatercera plaza en la clasificación mundial de la Federación Internacional de Rugby (IRB), después de que la semana pasada bajara dos posiciones por la derrota en Lisboa en partido del Campeonato de Europa, clasificatorio para el Mundial de Nueva Zelanda de 2011.

La selección española no ha ganado ningún partido de los tres que ha disputado en lo que llevamos de año, perdiendo ante Rumanía y Georgia, en Madrid, y ante Portugal en Lisboa.

En cuanto a los primeros puestos de la IRB, las tres potencias del Hemisferio Sur siguen copando las tres primeras posiciones, con los 'All Blacks' primeros una semana más, los actuales campeones del mundo segundos y los 'Wallabies' en tercera posición, mientras que Irlanda se confirma como primer país del Hemisferio Norte tras su brillante victoria en el Torneo VI Naciones.

Los irlandeses partían como octavos del mundo al inicio del torneo, pero su triunfo, acompañado de su segundo Grand Slam, les ha llevado hasta la cuarta posición. Por el contrario, el cuarto puesto cosechado finalmente por Gales, el anterior campeón del VI Naciones, le ha bajado hasta la séptima plaza, mientras que Inglaterra ha recuperado su sexta posición con la que arrancó el torneo y Francia pierda una y acaba octava.

Canadá se ha convertido en la primera selección que se supera la fase de clasificación y saca billete para el Mundial de Nueva Zelanda'2011 tras imponerse con claridad a Estados Unidos por 41-18 en Edmonton en el segundo partido de la eliminatoria.

El conjunto estadounidense había logrado en el partido de ida, disputado el pasado 4 de julio en Charleston (Carolina del Sur) un corto triunfo por 12-6 que no le ha servido en el encuentro de vuelta.

Los canadienses estarán en el Mundial en el grupo A junto a Nueva Zelanda, país organizador y gran favorito al triunfo final, Francia, Tonga y el primer clasificado de la zona de Asia.

Por su parte, EE.UU. deberá ahora buscar su clasificación a través de una nueva eliminatoria a doble partido ante Uruguay que determinará el clasificado como segundo del grupo de América y que quedará encuadrado en el grupo C del Mundial junto a Australia, Irlanda, Italia y el segundo de la zona europea.

El perdedor de este 'play-off', bien los Teros bien los 'yanquis', tendrán una nueva oportunidad de estar en Nueva Zelanda'11 a través de la repesca entre continentes de la fase de clasificación.

Samoa set out on road to 2011 World Cup

Matthew Vaea was part of Western Samoa's side which upset Wales at Rugby World Cup 1991It may be less than a week since Samoa confirmed their place at Rugby World Cup 2011 with a 188-19 aggregate victory over Papua New Guinea, but thoughts have already turned to their end of year tour.

Samoa triumphed 115-7 at home in Apia and then 73-12 in Port Moresby to book their place at the tournament in New Zealand, where they will be bidding to right the wrongs of 2007. In France they failed to attain the high standards they set themselves and lost against rivals Tonga, leaving them with a fourth place finish in their pool and needing to qualify for the 2011 event.

Having booked their place in New Zealand, they will now want to build momentum towards the showpiece event and that process starts this autumn against Wales, a side they will meet in Pool D at RWC 2011 and against whom they hold a proud record in World Cups.

In 1991, playing as Western Samoa, they stunned the Welsh in Cardiff with a 16-13 win en route to the quarter finals and eight years later defeated the tournament hosts 38-31 at the Millennium Stadium.

Matthew Vaea was part of that victorious side at Rugby World Cup 1991 and the former scrum half is now Samoa's team manager. He is hoping that history can repeat itself in 2011, when the islanders will also face defending champions South Africa, Fiji and the Africa 1 qualifier.

"Our next appointment is the northern hemisphere tour, which involves Wales, France and Italy in November," explained Vaea. "In between we have obviously got a lot of work to do in terms of preparation for 2011.

"There is a lot of preparation in Samoa and also trying to get our squad, our wider squad who are all over the globe in Europe and Japan, New Zealand and Australia, so there is a lot of admin work to be done before that tour.

Million dollar question

Vaea played eight tests between 1991 and 1995, so knows the importance of Samoa's end of season tour, when they will also face France and Italy in their steady build-up to World Cup.

"The tour is going to be important for us in terms of blooding in our squad for 2011, so we are looking forward to that. The boys will deserve a break now [after qualifying], but we have got a lot of background work to do."

Bringing together their players from around the world, and getting preparation time as a whole squad, remains 'a challenge' but one that Vaea and Samoa have been working hard to resolve in order to give themselves the best possible chance of creating another upset or two in 2011.

"It is the million dollar question [how difficult it is to get players together]," added Vaea. "It is hard in a sense that we get them from different playing styles, we get them from different atmospheres.

"It is also difficult when you have them for a short amount of time in terms of preparation before Test matches when you compare it to the Tier 1 nations New Zealand, Australia and the rest where you normally have those players in your domestic competition, whereas we don't have that luxury.

"Preparation time for us has always been a challenge but we manage - it is nothing new for us. We just try and negotiate and work with the overseas clubs so we can get a little bit more buy in in terms of time."

Rankings give twist to RWC 2011 qualifiers

Ironically that 10-9 win also came in a Rugby World Cup qualifying match in Montevideo back in August 2002, although they had lost the first leg by a bigger margin. They did, though, still make it to RWC 2003 in Australia.

However, their disappointment at losing out to Portugal for the final place at RWC 2007 by a single point on aggregate in the Repechage should be motivation enough to try to address that record against the Eagles.

Uruguay earned their place in this final Americas play-off by comfortably overcoming Brazil (71-3) and Chile (49-3) in the South American Championship in late April and early May, but had to wait two months to learn their opponents.

Late fightback boosts Uruguay's RWC hopes

Uruguay had won only one of their 10 previous meetings with the Eagles, their most recent loss being a 43-9 defeat in Salt Lake City last year, and at 27-9 they would have been left with a mountain to climb in Florida next weekend.

However, Uruguay full back Jerónimo Etcheverry - a member of their IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy winning side of 2008 - stepped forward to kick two penalties and convert his last minute try to cut the deficit to five points at the final whistle to the delight of the 2,000 strong crowd.

The 21-year-old's fourth penalty of the night and his converted try came when Uruguay enjoyed a one-man advantage after Eagles replacement Mike Petri was sent to the sin-bin by Argentinean referee Javier Mancuso.

"We are happy to win, but honestly a bit disappointed that we gave up so many points in the last quarter." admitted Eagles coach Eddie O'Sullivan. "We would have liked to walk away with a larger point spread, but in the end are happy to take away the victory."

The Eagles had taken the lead in the 15th minute at the Charrúa Stadium with scrum half Tim Usasz's try, before fly half Nicolas Morales got the home side on the board with a penalty five minutes later. Another try for Kevin Swiryn and a Mike Hercus penalty, though, gave the visitors a 13-3 advantage at half time.

Swiryn touched down for his second try eight minutes after the break and this time Hercus was able to add the conversion. Once more though Los Teros came back at their visitors with Etcheverry kicking his first penalty in the 55th minute to make it 20-6.

Uruguay's cause was not helped by the loss of prop Mario Sagario to the sin-bin just past the hour mark, and while Etcheverry kicked another penalty, the Eagles pulled further away with centre Junior Sifa's try.

However with Uruguay's scrum and maul remaining strong, Etcheverry brought them back into the match and strengthened their chances of taking the Americas 2 place alongside two-time winners Australia, Italy, Ireland and Europe 2 in Pool C at Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand.

USA qualify for RWC 2011

USA captain Todd Clever scored two tries at Broward County Regional Park, Lauderhill, Florida to assist his team to a total of eight touchdowns during the two matches.

Uruguay's only points came through two Jerónimo Etcheverry penalties, to add to the 13 points he scored in the first leg.

In front of 2237 spectators, Mike Hercus kicked a penalty for the home side early on, before Lou Stanfill and Kevin Swiryn extended USA's lead with two first-half tries.

Etcheverry kicked penalties either side of half time to bring Uruguay back to 13-6 down, but Clever touched down twice in the second period to leave the final score at 27-6.

Uruguay were not helped when Uruguay prop Mario Sagario was sent off with 25 minutes remaining.

USA will face Australia, Ireland, Italy and a European qualifier in Pool C at RWC 2011, playing matches in New Plymouth, Wellington and Nelson.

Uruguay will have one last chance to qualify through the cross-continental play-off.

Namibia inch closer to RWC 2011 qualification

The RWC 2011 dream is still alive for both sidesNamibia will take a slender five point advantage into the home leg of their African play-off for a place at Rugby World Cup 2011 after edging a closely fought encounter with Tunisia 18-13 at the Stade El Menzah.

The five previous meetings behind these African rivals had all been won the by home side, three of them by the Tunisians so an away win for Namibia would prove a confidence booster ahead of the home leg in Windhoek on 28 November.

In a match dominated by Namibia's forwards, it was their full back Chrysander Botha who literally got off to a flying start in the third minute, gathering an exceptional cross field pass and, with an explosion of pace, left enough space between him and the chasing Tunisians to score under the posts.

Having converted his try, the visitors settled down quickly with a 7-0 lead.

If the home team were rattled by the ease with which Botha seared through their defence, they regrouped quickly under the leadership of Hedi Souid and won a series of penalty kicks which saw the score close to 7-6 midway through the first half.

The teams went in at half time at 10-6, both knowing they had missed opportunities to add to their tally, Tunisia driving forward with speed but unable to cross the line and allowing Namibian to kick a penalty just before the whistle.

Namibia had been dominant in the scrum for much of the first half, their experience and power reflected in their ability to halt Tunisia's progress, leading home coach Danie de Villiers to make a significant change at scrum half, replacing Aziz Kassar with Chahir Aouadi.

Further changes from Tunisia, including the introduction of Mohamed Ali Kochlef, prop Sami Limevi and Aymen Gloulou, led to Tunisia's best spell of the game, which saw last gasp tackles deny them tries on two occasions.

The changes had had the desired effect and the forwards began to provide greater assistance to the backline, who enjoyed creative cohesion forged under the guidance of De Villiers in the Tunisia Sevens team.

However, if Namibia's first try was one of pace and agility, their second was born from power and perseverance as they worked the Tunisia defensive line to force an opening deep in the corner. The conversion was missed, but Namibia looked comfortable at 15-6 midway through the second half.

Tunisia finally saw some reward for their efforts when wing Abbes Kherfani touched down near the corner flag to the jubilation of the small but passionate crowd. Lofti Bensellem, who had missed with two drop goal attempts, kicked the conversion to cut the deficit to 15-13.

Namibia, though, showed their big match experience, having graced the Rugby World Cup stage three times before, and stole a penalty kick in the 77th minute to break their duck on Tunisian soil.

The two sides will come face to face again at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek in two weeks time, both confident they can win if they play to their relative strengths to take their place alongside South Africa, Wales, Fiji and Samoa in Pool D.

Namibia secure place at RWC 2011

Namibia captain Kees Lensing on the charge - Photo: Helge SchutzNamibia beat Tunisia 22-10 in a tense and physical match in Windhoek on Saturday to qualify for Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand and join world champions South Africa, Wales, Fiji and Samoa in Pool D.

The victory gives Namibia a 40-23 aggregate victory after they won the first leg in Tunis 18-13 a fortnight ago, the first time the away side had won an encounter between the two African rivals.

The battle for the Africa 1 qualifying spot was still wide open at half time with Tunisia holding a narrow 10-9 lead.

However, the visitors' discipline let them down as they were continuously penalised for offside and ruck infringements with Namibian fly half Emile Wessels taking full advantage with his accurate boot.

In the final minutes the visitors' frustrations boiled over as players from both sides were involved in a melee, which resulted in a red card and three yellow cards being issued by referee Marius Jonker.

Kicking the points

Tunisia suffered an early setback when their captain and prop Souid Hedi was sin binned for foul play after only three minutes, Wessels kicking the resulting penalty to give Namibia a 3-0 lead.

Four minutes later Namibian scrum half Eugene Jantjies nearly increased the lead when he broke away from a scrum and sent wing Bradley Langenhoven away on the left wing. When the cover defence caught up, Jantjies gathered from a maul but dotted down just short of the try-line.

Tunisian wing Abbes Kherfani missed with a penalty in the 14th minute, but shortly afterwards fly half Lotfi Ben Msallem kicked a drop goal from just outside the 22m line. This score lifted Tunisia, who started attacking more and prop Aouemri Akrem was bundled into touch a metre from the line after a forward drive.

Wessels restored Namibia's lead with a penalty in the 28th minute, but Tunisia then took the lead for the first time with a great try six minutes later. Namibian flanker PJ van Lill went on a fine run, but when he was brought down centre Sabeur Ben Charrada launched an incisive counterattack to pass to left wing Kherfani, who dived over next to the posts.

With Ben Msallem adding the conversion, Tunisia went 10-6 ahead. Wessels, though, slotted another penalty between the posts from the 10 metre line to cut the deficit to one point and then narrowly missed another kick that would have given the home side the lead at half time.

Second chance for Tunisia

Namibia immediately went on the attack in the second half as loose forwards Van Lill and Jacques Nieuwenhuis came close to scoring, only for Tunisia's defence to hold out.

The home side's incessant pressure resulted in a five-metre penalty, but scrum half Jantjies missed another great chance when he knocked on going over the line. Tunisia were, however, penalised for offside and Wessels put Namibia 12-10 ahead with a penalty.

Namibia went further ahead through a great try by number eight Tinus du Plessis just past the hour mark. Full back Chrysander Botha launched a counterattack and the ball spun across the backline to Langenhoven and Piet van Zyl before Du Plessis was on hand to crash over for the try. Wessels added the conversion to put Namibia 19-10 ahead.

Tunisia were once again reduced to 14 men when prop Mohamed Ali Kochlaf was sin binned, but despite being a man down, they camped on Namibia's try-line. Tunisia had about six attempts at scoring from a maul repelled before fly half Ben Msallem tried a drop goal which went wide of the mark.

Namibia finished strongly, with loose forwards Van Lill and Jacques Burger putting in strong runs, and when Tunisia were penalised for offside, Wessels slotted over the penalty from in front of the posts.

The victory at the Hage Geingob Stadium ensured Namibia's qualification for Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand - the fourth successive time that they have qualified for the showpiece tournament. Tunisia have another chance to qualify for their first ever World Cup, via the cross-continental play-off next year.

Tamati Ellison abre la puerta al éxodo

El jugador de Hurricanes Tamati Ellison renuncia a la Copa del Mundo de Nueva Zelanda 2011 al aceptar un contrato para jugar en Japón. NZRU teme que no sea el único.

Aún no se saben ni los detalles de la operación ni la cantidad que cobrará el jugador. Se especula que el club nipón sería el Ricoh Rams y el salario ascendería a unos 350.000 US dólares por año.

Como es norma en la Federación Neocelandesa de Rugby sólo permite la participación en los All Blacks a los jugadores que desempeñen sus funciones en el país. Pero poderoso cabeallero es don dinero, y Ellison parece ser el primero de unos cuántos que también estarían dispuestos a renunciar a su participación en 2011 a cambio de un buen salario. NZRU está expectante y no sin cierto miedo.

Seguiremos informando de lo que ya la prensa califica como la señal de salida para el “éxodo” de jugadores.
